To Zibi Bilyk, the cracked and repaired asphalt that appears on almost any road (often referred to as crocodile cracking) imitates the intangible lines and unrestrained marks associated with an abstract drawing. His concept is based on the Readymade as defined by Marcel Duchamp in 1915, whose definition of the Readymade involved choosing an object and repositioning or joining, titling and signing it. After this single, minimal action, the object then became Art. Bilyk’s artworks are extracted from the road and hung on to the wall, thus defining them Readymades.
